Tips for Dealing with Period-Related Acne

The thing that is most responsible for period-related acne is hormones - namely progesterone and estrogen. If you get acne due to period-related hormones, its usually going to happen about 7 to 10 days before your period begins.

The main reason is that at this time, both hormones are at their lowest in the body in order to trigger your body to break down the uterine lining so you can experience a period. Knowing why you are experiencing acne, lets look at some tips for dealing with it.

* OTC Treatments Keep some benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid around and simply apply it to your skin, especially the blemishes, each evening, and you can expect it to either stop erupting or go away fast.

* Antibiotics If you have cystic acne, your doctor may prescribe topical or internal antibiotics to you. This is a pretty radical treatment that can affect your gut health tremendously, so make sure that this is what you really want before you do it.

* Oral Contraceptives For some girls with horrible hormonal-related acne, some oral contraceptives will clear up the skin very well. The type of oral contraceptives available for acne treatment that has been approved by the FDA contains both estrogen and progesterone, as we now know that progesterone-only contraceptives make this type of acne worse.

* Makeup Ensure that you are using the right type of makeup for your skin type. While you dont have to spend tons of money on the right makeup, do read the ingredients and avoid oils and other ingredients that can cause breakouts.

* Eat Right Eating right is an essential component in staying healthy in every single way, including dealing with hormonal acne. If you eat better, with more veggies and produce, less processed food, less fried food, and being careful about the salt, sugar, and fat youre eating, you will usually experience clearer skin.

* Stress Try to cut down on your stress level too. Hormones can cause you to feel anxious and stressed, and that can be made worse by using drugs and alcohol (and that includes caffeine). When you cut down on the stress, you lower the stress hormones in your body and will get clearer skin.

* Hydrate Its imperative that you drink enough water every single day. 64 ounces is the starting point and the first goal. You may need more water than that. It depends on your activity level, where you live, and what you eat. But no matter what, one of the best things you can do for your skin is keeping it hydrated.

Finally, dont pick at your skin. Keep your hands away from acne spots. Dont over-manipulate your skin either. Keep it clean, moisturized and try to keep the oil down, but the less you do to your skin, the better. If you have painful acne, do see a doctor because you may need more treatments.
